Job Summary: Provides oversight and professional genetic counseling services to patients and their families.

Responsibilities:

• Provides genetic counseling and support to patients and families regarding genetic disorders and birth defects.
• Obtains and documents appropriate family history, including information that is known prior to, during, and after the counseling session.
• Coordinates all genetic testing including designating appropriate laboratories for testing and performs follow up on abnormal tests results.
• Identifies families at risk and investigates the problem present in the family. Interprets information about the disorder and analyzes inheritance patterns and the risks of recurrence. Reviews available options with the family.
• Acts as a professional/community resource.
• Researches current advances in the field of genetics/genetics counseling.
• Provides oversight and serves as the subject matter expert related to genetics counseling.
• Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Education:

• Master's Degree in genetics required.

Requirements:

• Board certification or eligibility as a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Genetics required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 4 years experience required.
• Utilizes hospital and departmental resources to fulfill responsibilities. Receives direction and guidance related to patient care from the director and manager of the department. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work with emotional patients.
• Follows Standard Precautions and/or other appropriate precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
