Job Summary: Under the supervision of a pathologist coordinates the receiving, processing and gross description of all patient tissue specimens sent to the laboratory for diagnostic evaluation and postmortem examinations.
Responsibilities:
- Performs detailed gross anatomic description and sectioning of patient tissue sent to the lab for evaluation. May perform detailed gross dissection, description and sectioning of autopsy.
- Organizes gross room workflow for efficiency and productivity.
- Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of surgical pathology area.
- Functionalizes the details of research protocols and clinical trials by analyzing the type of tissue needed and ensuring the integrity of the tissue
- May instruct, assign and/or assists pathology residents, students and new employees in protocol for handling and describing specimens.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Successful completion of NAACLS Pathology Assistant program. Meet ongoing education requirements for certification.
- PA (ASCP) certification or eligible. Certification must be obtained within 1 year of employment.
- Pathology Assistant experience or training and/or histotechnology laboratory experience required.
- Requires independent, individualized teaching of pathology and non-pathology residents, medical and pathology students. Requires critical thinking skills and decisive judgment. Must be able to prioritize and integrate responsibilities into workflow to ensure timely turn-around time of patient specimens.
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment, including eyewear, as required for procedures.
