Job Summary: Identifies and manages medical problems within the Physician Assistant's and nurse practitioner's scope of practice in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU).
Job Responsibilities:
* Provides appropriate patient care to include completing daily patient care rounds on critical care patients, recording patient medical history and physical assessment, developing therapeutic care plan, ordering diagnostic tests, interpreting test results, discharge planning and providing accurate medical record documentation for critical care patients.
* Communicates with attending physician and cardiovascular disease fellows regarding plan of care and involves physician in clinical decision making of any issues that are outside the knowledge base or scope of practice.
* Obtains complete medical history and physical data on patients.
* Performs physical exams, documents in the medical record, orders appropriate laboratory & diagnostic procedures and established presumptive diagnosis as defined in the written agreement between the PA/ ACNP and the supervising physician(s).
* Assists in bedside procedures such as PICC line and central line placements, Swan Ganz catheter placements, temporary pacemaker insertions, thoracentesis, paracentesis and others.
* Help remove intravenous lines, Swan Ganz catheter.
* Prepares written prescription orders for drugs as defined in the written agreement between the PA/ ACNP and the supervising physician(s).
* Educates patients and family members regarding health and illness prevention, medication and treatment instructions, and recommends community resources as needed.
* Triages patient telephone calls.
* Participates in continuing education initiatives for nurses in the CICU and other CV units.
* Communicates with physicians from other specialties regarding patients in the CICU.
* Performs all other duties as assigned or required outside the CICU
Job Requirements:
* Master’s Degree required.
* PA Physician Assistant or ACNP Licensure required.
* Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Must be able to work in a dynamic and challenging environment and take appropriate actions.
* Must be able to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary cardiovascular care team
* Must be ACLS certified
